Hi, I’m Morag and I’m good with numbers, ask a lot of questions and like being organised – why am I mentioning that, because it helps me to help my clients.
My background is mainly in financial services. I started it in audit, which gave me a good grounding in business and finance and used those skills to move onto project, banking and management roles. Throughout my career I’ve had to understand key drivers and core risks quickly and consider ‘what if” to review options and impact of different scenarios.
Working in banking for the past 15 years has been interesting and challenging (and a bit scary at times!) – from growth to boom times into credit crunch, recession, gradual improvement and uncertainty. I’ve learned how important it is to look at the risks, not just in your own business, but for your clients and suppliers as the knock on effect can have a serious impact on your business.
I’ve worked with a wide range of Business and Corporate banking clients across different sectors through good and bad times where I’ve had to understand their business, structure and restructure lending and manage the risk as well as building strong relationships with a network of professional advisors.
My last banking position was in business planning, strategy and operational risk – which pretty much sums up what I do now. As part of the management team, I designed business plans, set KPIs, developed reporting systems and devised initiatives to meet targets. I’ve had to manage relationships with range of stakeholders including senior management, team members and external advisors and tailor information accordingly. Projects have included acquisitions to disposals; cost reduction to income optimisation; team restructures and improving working practices.
We set up M&P to share our experiences of working in large organisations to help smaller companies to achieve their potential. I love creating plans to help clients succeed. I know how hard it is to start your own business where you have to do it all yourself – it’s very different from corporate life! It takes time to realise that you need help. It’s not efficient to do everything and sometimes it’s better to pass some tasks to other people so you can focus on your strengths
We have a very structured approach in developing plans for clients. We work together to understand your goals and challenges, review your business and create plans to develop your strategy and prioritise actions to keep you focused. We have a team with skills in different sectors and work with a network of associates who we can bring in to cover other specialisms.
I love sharing the benefit of my experience to help other people and work in voluntary roles as a Business Wales mentor and Trustee of a Multi Academy Trust. I’m also on the passenger panel for a train operator helping to pass on the views of travellers.
I think some of the photos give you an idea of what I do away from work! I’m a keen runner (and keep signing up for 10ks, half and marathons whatever the weather), love to travel and am often found at concerts, the theatre or sporting events.
